I don't know if I am matching the wrong certificate number but looked in the Los Angeles links and failed miserably. Would be grateful of your expertise

The number assigned in the State indexs is meaningless. Death Certificates are handle by the counties or cities ( If a very large city).

You must first locate the number in the count or city death index and then use that number to look up the death certificate in the corresponding year and city/county death certificate database.
