In 1715 John Barlow of Lawrenny was appointed Mayor, since he considered that the Town of Pembroke was Quote “with a great distemper of ye Small Pox at present very violent in the said Town” (i.e. Pembroke) he flatly refused to leave Lawrenny to take up the appointed position. Full transcript comes from my research into early Borough records and is as follows ;
At a Common Councill held the 10th day of October 1715 at the Guildhall of the Town of Pembroke present the psons underwritten.
Whereas John Barlow of Lawrenny Esqr who was one of the three psons menconed at the last Quarter Court on ye Nominacon to serve the said Town as Mayor and other offices granted by Charter for ye ensuing yeare was accordingly elected by the Councill and Burgesses at ye said Court and whereas the said John Barlow having been made acquainted therewith has signified his being willing to serve the said office but that there is a distemper of ye Small Pox at present very violent in the said Town the dangers of which he is not willing to mean but will readily serve on another oppertunity ordered that Richard Evans Gent be added unto the said nominacon instead of the said John Barlow Esqr who is by the Councill presence throught a fitt pson to serve the said office of Mayor and that he be exhibited to the Burgesses for their approbacon.
