Up to a million horses were killed in WWI - We still had cavalry units (soldiers on horses), horses were used to pull big gun carriages, the ambulances, as well as being used as pack horses alongside mules to carry equipment and food, etc.

I think it was in the 1980s during a government's cost cutting exercise that it was discovered we still had heated warehouses brim full of bridles, reins, saddles, horse shoes, leg protectors and other horse and mule paraphernalia from the Great War.

Hi, I wonder if you can help, I am trying to find out more information on my Grandad Robert Curry, he was a saddler in WW1 with the Royal Scots I believe. This is the same Mr R Curry you are discussing.........
My names Darren Robert Curry

Horse drawn ambulances!! Obviously!! I can't believe I didn't think of that - I had a vision in my head of them loading horses up with injured men (how stupid).

Robert Curry married Jane McGowan in 1925 at St John ythe Baptist church in Barnsley. But Jane was born in pelton fell which is really close to chester le street.

A warehouse with lots of WW1 saddles was found when I was at RAF Upavon 1969/70 think it was at Bicester.

Perhaps the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark isn't far from the truth  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Edit - my paternal grandfather was in the Veterinary Corps - The book, film, play -  War Horse might help you understand what was happening.

My Grandad was the Robert Curry the original poster was also searching for, married to Jane McGowan my dads mother and father. He was definitely a saddler and was captured and mustard gassed during the First World War..... I’m desperate to find out some more info and hopefully his regiment number for his time with the royal Scots infantry......
thanks for your responses so far though!!

There's another Robert Curry R.Scots served with the 1/8th. 2nd. & 11th. Batts.
I can't find a service record for him. The original poster claims he was RAMC can you clarify this for us?

Sorry, what’s the RAMC?? He was born 1898 and sadly passed in 1970. I double checked a few of the facts on here with my dad who confirmed regarding the marriage and where he lived.
I can also ask him a few more questions to help if need be.
Thanks

RAMC=Royal Army Medical Corps.
This Robert Curry was medically discharged & never went overseas.
We just need to establish which regiment he was in.
Where has the R.Scots info come from?
