Perrys of The Pelican Inn Devizes Wiltshire
« on: Thursday 16 May 13 00:51 BST (UK) »
Does any one have any info on The Pelican Inn Devizes? I believe from various directories that Horatio Nelson Perry owned and ran it but the census record shows him in Southbroom. I think his father around 1820 was William Perry. Is there any way I can check this.Thanks. M Inn

Can you add a little detail that might help someone look for info?

When was HNP born?
When you say "his father around 1820 was William Perry" do you mean that was WP's approx date of birth?

The GRO index shows

- two deaths for the name Horatio Nelson Perry in Devizes: 1844 and 1853
- a birth for that name in 1850 in Bath -- and that person seems (from the censuses, a chemist) to have married in 1884 in Gravesend and then died there in 1909
- marriages for that name in 1846 Leicester, 1876 Burton, 1894 Farnham

Can you give details of the census record in Southbroom? (It doesn't seem to be a census location until 1901.)

In 1881 there was a Morris family at the Pelican Inn in Devizes St John.

The 1830 one could be the one married to Sarah, born c1799. In 1841 he was a farmer in Bishops Canning. This is probably his will, 1853:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/details/D30813?descriptiontype=Full&ref=PROB+11/2174/322

He married a Sarah Perry daughter of Thomas, but his father's name is not stated here:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N6RN-Q3F

I think the one who died in 1844 was probably that one's son who is in the 1841 census.

Of course, there could have been another HNP who died before 1837.

Southbroom House? Southbroom Farm? Southbroom Cottage?

Was the Royal Oak renamed the Pelican?

The 1841 census seems to say Southbroom farm house, for both the Horatio and Sarah Perry household and the John and Priscilla Berry household just before them.
