Births before 1851
« on: Saturday 18 May 13 19:20 BST (UK) »

Hi there,

I am helping someone with their family search.

Find it very strange, none of the children births appear to have been registered. I know it wasn't compulsory to register before 1855, but you would think some of them would have been  :-\.

Any suggestions.

Regards,

Can you find any of their baptisms? I believe that in the  early days of registration some people thought that having a child baptised was the same as registering them.

Have you tried different spellings of the surname?

If you put the names, years and places of birth on here someone may be able to help you.

Thank you for explaining this to me.

Where would I look for their baptisms?.

I have looked for their births on Scotlands People as well as Family search. Will try a different surname. Can try the name Gass with one "s" and see what happens.

The children are:

David Gass b. 1808  d. 1810
Jane Gass b. 1813  d. 1820 aged 7 yrs
Margaret Gass b. abt. 1816
George Gass  b. abt. 1821
Mary Gass b. ??
Parents James Gass (joiner) and Elizabeth Steel married and lived in Annan.

Also tried the IGI's on microfishe at the library.

Thank you

Hi

The OPRs on Scotlandspeople are only the Registers for the Church of Scotland, SP does have seperate sections for Catholic Parish Registers but the various other denominations such as Episcopal (the Anglican Church in Scotland), are not online apart from a few batches indexed on Familysearch.org.

Looking at the dates you give, they were all before registration started, so as far as I am aware the only records you may be able to find are baptisms.

Hi

I am afraid I cant help you there as I dont know much about Scottish records. If I were you I would start a new thread on the Scotland board with their names and dates of birth. Hopefully someone there may either have access to parish records or be able to tell you where to look.
