Hi all,

Can anyone do anything with this as I think this is my great great grandfathers brother.

Andrew Kernan who arrived on the AURORA on the 22 Apr 1848 age 30 so that would mean he was born in 1818.

I would be very grateful of any help to see if I can find him in any census as he never came back home and died in America.

Thanks for all your help

Kieran

Hi Kieran,

Have you found him on any census ? Family search have a good variety of census and other records. ?

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=post;topic=647670.0;last_msg=4942921

Have you got any further information on him ? In 2010 we looked for information on a
Andrew McKernan and Bridget McKernan nee Heron in the Diamond thread - is this the same chap ?
Marriage was in 1837 if I remember correctly - think that was also recorded on the Diamond thread.

We also looked at a family in New Jersey but you were not sure it was the right family. (around reply 12) We looked at some deaths for the same couple around reply 55 - you had Andrew Kernan born 1804 in that query ?
Remember checking Kernan, Kiernan, McKernan and lots of other variations at that time

From the: New York Immigrant Savings Bank

have found an Andrew Kiernan born 1817 Galway - arrived on the Aurora 1848 living at 520 West 27th street.  He is recorded as a Book Peddler (I think!) and married to a Rose Kennedy born 1820 Meath and arrived 1852 on the ship "Moonlight".

This information was recorded 27 Feb 1871.

on the 1880 census (Census Place: New York City, New York, New York; Roll: 885; Family History Film: 1254885; Page: 39C; Enumeration District: 377) there is:

Andrew Kiernan age 60 born Ireland - occupation Paper Carrier
Rose Kiernan     age 45 born Ireland -

They are boarders with a family called Duffy.

Not found anything else as yet.

Andrew & Rosy are shown as married, Andrews occupation is Clerk and years resident in New York are:

From the website:  http://www.italiangen.org/

There is a death for:

Surname   Given Name   Age      Month   Day         Year   Certificate Number   County
Kiernan    Andrew           75 y            Feb             4          1899          3718                    Manhattan

This would give a birth date of 1824 and is a bit of a long shot but worth noting for future reference.

Hi Sandra and Ray,

Thanks for all your help.  Sandra you are right about the Andrew we were looking for before and that his wife was Bridget.  Unfortunately none of the older members in the family circle know where in America he went and the only information I have from Ireland is that he was married in 1837.

However, he does appear in the Griffith's  Valuation

http://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=21&Submit.y=8&Submit=Submit&familyname=Kernan&firstname=&baronyname=&countyname=LONDONDERRY&unionname=&parishname=

Along with his brother my great great grandfather Felix, so Andrew went to America after that.

Thanks for all your help

Kieran

So we are looking for Andrew with a Bridget (Biddy Haran)  and a daughter Margaret born in 1848 ?  (going from memory again) Unless of course he remarried ?
