FATAL ACCIDENT-MAN DROWNED.-On Thursday night an old man named Henry Gentle, a servant in the employ of Mr. Alfred J. Doyle, was accidentally drowned in the river Hunter, a short distanoe below Mr. Doyle's residence, Midlorn. He had been in Maitland with his wife, about seven o'clock in the even- ing, and at eight o'olock they crossed the river to go home. He landed his wife at the usual place, and took a basket to the top of the bank for her. He then said he would go back and fasten the boat more securely. The wife proceeded to the hut, thinking he would soon follow; but as he did not return in a quarter of an honr she went in search of him. A Mrs. Hodson had seen him in a stoop- ing position near the boat. The bank was slippy - a few minutes after she looked out, and not see- ing him again, supposed he had gone home. Several times during the night the wife went to the place, and could not find any trace of her husband. Next morning search was resumed, and Mr. Doyle, senior constable Gordon, and two others dragged the river, and found the body of " Old Harry." the name by which he was generally known - within a short distance of where the boat was fastened. Neither Gentle nor his wife were sober when they crossed the river. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon by Mr. Thomson, district coroner, at the house of Richard Moran, East View, and the ver- dict given was "accidentally drowned, whilst partially intoxicated." The deceased was sixty years of age.
