Henry Gentle
« on: Thursday 23 May 13 17:23 BST (UK) »
My 4x Great Grandfather (Henry Gentle Born 1795 Stotfold Beds) was transported to Australia on the 27th November 1831.  He sailed on the Isabella, and arrived at Sydney.  I believe that during the voyage there was a mutiny by the sailors.  In 1838, Henry was working for Andrew Lang who owned the Dunsmore Estate in West Maitland.  I am particularly interested if there are any records of where and how he spent his time, but not sure where to look.  Or if anyone has any information about his employer - Andrew Lang or the Dunsmore Estate.

Many Thanks

The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser (NSW : 1843 - 1893)
Saturday 14 May 1864

FATAL ACCIDENT-MAN DROWNED.-On Thursday night an old man named Henry Gentle, a servant in the employ of Mr. Alfred J. Doyle, was accidentally drowned in the river Hunter, a short distanoe below Mr. Doyle's residence, Midlorn. He had been in Maitland with his wife, about seven o'clock in the even- ing, and at eight o'olock they crossed the river to go home. He landed his wife at the usual place, and took a basket to the top of the bank for her. He then said he would go back and fasten the boat more securely. The wife proceeded to the hut, thinking he would soon follow; but as he did not return in a quarter of an honr she went in search of him. A Mrs. Hodson had seen him in a stoop- ing position near the boat. The bank was slippy - a few minutes after she looked out, and not see- ing him again, supposed he had gone home. Several times during the night the wife went to the place, and could not find any trace of her husband. Next morning search was resumed, and Mr. Doyle, senior constable Gordon, and two others dragged the river, and found the body of " Old Harry." the name by which he was generally known - within a short distance of where the boat was fastened. Neither Gentle nor his wife were sober when they crossed the river. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon by Mr. Thomson, district coroner, at the house of Richard Moran, East View, and the ver- dict given was "accidentally drowned, whilst partially intoxicated." The deceased was sixty years of age.

Well I drive past your ancestors abode daily and live pretty much in the area that they frequented for work.

I have attached a piece on Dunmore House. There is much on this area and the inhabitants and we are fortunate that many of the old homes have been preserved.

This has a nice map of the estate and surrounding area. The home Dunmore House is right where the number 1050 is on the map.

A bit more on the Maitland area and Dunmore. The Bridge over the Paterson River has just been completely redone in exactly the same manner as first built and stands as a fine example of Timber Truss Bridge. Still single lane it strikes people from outside the area as to why it wasn't widened to two lanes when rebuilt. Of course it was heritage listed and any work done has to reflect that. It is called the Dunmore Bridge and spans from Woodville on one side where a quaint general store still stands opposite one of the oldest churches in Australia. It is not a consecrated church anymore, but is still used every week for weddings and is so popular that bookings need to be made several years in advance. The store still has a hitching rail for horses and a very creaky front verandah where locals sit and enjoy a coffee. It is still the post office for the area.

The area your ancestor died is now a bridge crossing the Hunter River from West Maitland to Lorn it is called Belmore Bridge and is a very busy route nowadays. Lorn where they lived in their Hut (as referred to earlier) is now very much a demand area and contains many homes from the 19th century. All the Doctors and Lawyers and Newspaper Proprietors built their homes there.

Hope you enjoy the connection.

One last bit, it is the video of the bridge reconstruction by The NSW Road Transport Association. RTA.

It shows quite a bit on the surrounds as well so you can get a picture of the area and best of all right near the end it has an Aerial shot of Dunmore House and its relationship geographically to the Bridge which holds it's name.

Hope you enjoy it.

Unfortunately I cannot find much more on your Henry.

Cheers
