Hi Tornado 304 and welcome to the Sussex boards  ;D

Although he says he was born in Eastbourne it is likely that Alfred was baptised in Ewhurst 25 Jul 1824 to parents Thomas and Hannah.
In 1841 the family can be found in Hellingly which is much closer to Eastbourne than Ewhurst is.

There are two siblings also baptised in Ewhurst
Barbara 15 Apr 1821
Mercy 8 Jun 1823

It looks like they move to Hollington, Hastings some time after and have the following children baptised there.
Hannah 17 Feb 1828
Sarah 18 Jul 1830
Thomas 13 Jan 1833

The family minus Mercy and Barbara and Sarah can be found in Hellingly in 1841

The Rollason surname is quite difficult to follow as it ends up being spelled so many different ways!

The father Thomas has his occupation as a labourer/shepherd so it is likely he moved around for work.

The likely marriage is Thomas Rollason to Hannah Kemp 12 Apr 1820 in Sedlescombe. Sedlescombe is past Hastings but given the amount of moving the family has done it is a good bet.

In 1851 the family fragments and it is just Thomas, Hannah and Sarah with a grand-daughter Charlotte Sload in Eastbourne, Thomas looks to be going under the name James.

With the name changes be careful with this one and double check everything!

Regards
Sean

Explains why Alfred chose Eastbourne as his place of birth I guess.
