Hi Carol,

I'm working back from what I know: My GG grandfather was Thomas Cope. His marriage cert (29 Dec 1845 in Cheadle) says he's 21, a bachelor, labourer, from the parish of Kingsley, father George, a labourer.

There's a baptism of a Thomas Cope on 15 Feb 1824 at St Peter's, Alton, parents George, labourer, and Sarah (abode Oakamoor).

This led to a marriage on 8 Nov 1823 in St Peter's, Alton, of George Cope (from Leigh, Staffs) and Sarah Hall.

Then I found a baptism at Gratwich on 10 Oct 1802 for a George Cope, parents Thomas and Sarah. Thomas and Sarah had 5 children (Mary 1800, George 1802, John 1804, Elizabeth 1806 and William 1807). It looks as though Sarah died, as Thomas and wife Ann and 2 children (Sarah and Thomas) are in Alton in 1851, listing Doveridge as his place of birth. Not found either marriage yet though, or even proof that this Thomas is one and the same, so it's all possibilities at the moment but all the info received gives me things to work with.

I rummaged through my notes that I have collected on my 'Cope' reseach.

Found the following....

Thomas COPE married Sarah TURNER
3 November 1799 - Walton on Trent - Derbyshire.
This marriage is on the Derbyshire Marriage Index 1538 - 1837.  Also on Family Search

Sarah TURNER - baptised 18 March 1779 - Walton on Trent.
Father - Thomas TURNER.
Record - on Family Search.

MARRIAGE:
Thomas COPE to Ann FOX - 18 September 1824 - Rocester. (this was a submitted record).
Was this Thomas Cope's second marriage.?

The Walton on Trent records are at Matlock Records office.

Just found a marriage for a Thomas Turner to Ann Collier - 12 October 1773 - Walton on Trent - possibly connected.??

I would need to check the original records to see if there is any information that will help determine if I am on the right track.

I've put a request on the Staffs lookup board (as the records are in Lichfield) to see if anyone can find the licence for George and Elizabeth Smith in 1765.
