Bible belonging to Charles F Hardie
« on: Wednesday 05 June 13 14:31 BST (UK) »
I recently bought a bible belonging to Charles F Hardie given to him by his father in 1895.
I believe this man to be a religious man as there are many pen written comments within the bible.
there is also a mention of a Rev. A E Stuart and a copy of a poem written by an Australian workman working in a field.
is anyone related to this man or his family?
I would like to get it to them !
regards
Elinga

What country was it bought in?
Is there an inscription by 'father' written in it - if so what does it say - does it give any clues as to Charles's age when he was given it?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

all that is written on the front page is his name and a place name beside the date with "from Father"   but cant read it , will scan and post later as I am on lap top at the moment.
it was printed at the University Press Oxford for The London Bible Warehouse, for the London Bible Warehouse , 58 Paternoster Row, London and the manager was Walter S Forster, also printed on the front page  is , Ruby 16mo. Refs; Oxford Facsimile Series, No 5 , which might mean something to someone
I know they opened in London in 1873, but havent managed to find out when Forster was the manager.
written by pen is The Trinity of Divine Love and Plan of Salvation which at the bottom says in a different colour of ink but by the same hand writing (I think)  "Found in the Rev A. E Stuarts Bible                                                                                                                                                                        that is dated Sept 97.
The poem written by the Australian workman is called  "A Christians Bank"
on the back pages there is initials SWT sept 97 , so dont know who that may be !

I've done some preliminary digging and I think Charles F Hardie might be the son of George Hardie (born in Samoa) who might be the son of Charles Hardie...
I'll do some more digging and get those dates sorted out!

I shall await your wisdom Ruthie ;-)
the writing that is inside is very small and neat and definitely not the same writing as "Father", but recent writings dated Sept 97.
dont know if someone else has been using it !

Elaine

Do you have access to the 1911 census? There's an example of Charles F Hardie's handwriting which looks very small and neat. Might it be similar?
