Stockwell Orphanage
« on: Thursday 06 June 13 11:45 BST (UK) »
James Percy Schofield was my grand uncle. In the 1891 census age 14, he is living at Stockwell Orphanage, but his mother is still alive, but is says he is an orphan, his father died in 1885. Does anyone have any ideas why.

Hi
My Gt Grandmother's half sister Kate Jaques was also in Stockwell Orphanage in 1891 during the census. She was 12 at the time and her father had died 10 years previously. The first page of the Enumeration sheets says that the orphanage is for the maintenance and education of fatherless children, so not necessarily a place for children without both parents. I haven't got details of Kate's stay in Stockwell, I don't even know if they are still available, this is not a line of the family that I have concentrated on, as Kate's mother was my Gt Gt Grandfather's second wife.

Hope someone is able to let you know if the records still exist, I would be very interested. It might be of help when I decide to follow this line of the family.

Stockwell will trace records for £20. You have to apply for a form online.
