In what town/city did John & Elizabeth marry?  New York did not require vital registration until 1881, but a few localities have vital records earlier than that. 

You also may want to check the 1875 New York state census to see if they were there then.  https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1918735

Think they were back in Scotland by then. Just wondering if you were not migrants just visiting and had a child while still in USA do you register child in America or Scotland

New York State did not require vital registration then, so I don't think they would have to obtain a birth certificate unless the locality required it.  If they had the child baptized, there may be a church record, but it may not be easy to find if you don't know specific details.

If they married and had a child there, it doesn't sound like they were "just visiting".  More likely, they moved, one thing or another didn't work out, and they returned home.
