Graveyards- Sligo/Roscommon - advice wanted

I'm interested in the smallish area, roughly between Boyle and Castlebaldwin, partly in Co Sligo and partly in Co Roscommon.
I'm heading for the Sligo area at the end of the week and I can feel some graveyard-hunting coming on!

Co Sligo .. Castlebaldwin and perhaps Ballinafad
Co Roscommon .. Corrigeenroe

Could anyone give advice about graveyards in this area?

I know there's a church in Corrigeenroe, with some graves. Is there anywhere else in this neighbourhood?
I think from the O.S. atlas that the R.C. church for Castlebaldwin is at ?Sheerevagh (sp?) ..
.. is this correct, and does it have a graveyard?

All advice gratefully received, especially from clued-in locals!

Hello eadaoin,

Can only offer info on Roscommon. The Corrigeenroe Church is primarily headstones for the Woulfe family who were the primary landholders in the area. The only cemeteries identified in the 2005 Graveyard Survey for Roscommon - identify for the Boyle Parish and Aghanagh Parish:-

The open/closed relates merely status to burials and the GPS locations should assist .There are no burial grounds between Boyle and the border other than those identified north east of the town. The Child Burial Grounds were primarily for unbaptized children and were in many cases still used upto the mid 1960's.

I've found all those graveyards on the map ...
the family was catholic and living in Corrigeenroe, so I can probably discount the CofI ones
- and probably Trinity and Coolnagranshy

which leaves Corrigeenroe itself ...
and Erris and the various Boyle ones.

This is perhaps an unanswerable question! Do you think someone from Corrigeenroe was likely to have been buried in Boyle town and surrounds? .. It's 5 or 6 miles away. Maybe Ballinafad in Co Sligo would be handier?

Burial would I suggest depend on an individuals long standing ties to an area be it Corrigeenroe or Boyle. I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the C of I sites as a number of C of I sites also accommodated Catholic burials. A site in question is the now closed St Coman's C of I burial site in Roscomon Town which saw both Catholic and C of I interments.

The low number of burial grounds in this area could support both arguments of mixed denomination burials or a tradition of burials in and around Boyle. The tradition of adding the townland where the interred was from would be the strongest indicators of the practice in the area.

It might be in your interests whilst you are in the area to establish if there are any Heritage groups attached to the various burial grounds as there are in other areas, as these would be in a better position to answer any questions you have.

I'll have a look at Corrigeenroe, Ballinafad and maybe Sheerevagh on the way up to Sligo.

Then maybe some of the Boyle graveyards on the way home (OH being agreeable, of course!)

At Ballinafad overlooking the lower end of Lough Arrow is Aghanagh Cemetery.

The small Cemetery near Derrygolagh and Brougher Townlands is Templevanny Cemetery.

At Kesh is Knockbrack Cemetery.

All within a few miles of each other.

I just missed your reply before I headed off on Thursday!

I saw a few graveyards, found no relations, but enjoyed myself enormously.
On the way up we went to Corrigeenroe church, then drove over to Ballinafad church.
I saw Aghanagh Cemetery on the map, so we explored it pretty thoroughly - it semed quite a likely one, but no luck.

Coming back today, we dropped into Sheerevagh church and (newish 1950+) graveyard. Met a lovely man there who told us to go to Kilmorgan for our Castlebaldwin people and that lots of Corrigeenroe people were buried in Kilmactranny (no-one in the the part of the cemetery that we searched - will have to go back when they've cut the waist-high grass in the older part).

Kilmorgan will have to wait for another day, as will some of Padraig3's suggestions.

(We also had a great weekend at Rosses Point Sea Shanty Festival in aid of the Lifeboats - 4 days of eating, drinking, singing till we were hoarse, and all for a very good cause)

eadaoin - would love to chat with you about your McLoghlins - I think mine might be from Corrigeenroe too and I'm having a third person's dna tested right now whose mother was a McLoughlin from Corrigeenroe.  He told me some information about his family.  Anyways contact me if you can.
