Hi

Could his mother's maiden name be McQuarrie? If so John Alexander married Mary Ann Mcquarrie in South Leith 16 Nov 1832.  This couple had a son born 22 May 1834 called William - baptized Canongate. Census evidence would suggest two other brothers namely John Knox Alexander born about 1837 and Colin born about 1840. Colin also seems to have been a painter but 1901 finds him a patient in the asylum at West House.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

No problem. John would seem to have been born about 1811 and Mary Ann 1813. The censuses that I have been able to find all show them living in the Old Town of Edinburgh in the Canongate area. In 1851 Mary has been transcribed as Maria. In 1961 she and John are living with Hector in Shoemaker's Close. John is said to be a mason's labourer (in 1851 he is field labourer). I have not found a census entry for John and Mary in 1871 but in 1881 Mary is living with Colin and his wife Elizabeth in Milnes Court.

Hope this helps

Just come across the thread.

I'm interested in discovering the parentage of the father of Mary Ann McQUARRIE, Colin McQUARRIE. I know he was a labourer when he married Marion WALDIE 12 Apr 1796 Edinburgh and died 20 May 1835 Edinburgh age 68 still a labourer; and hence he was born about 1767.

My McQUARRIEs (or McWHARRIEs) come from Ayrshire, headed by Robert McQUARRIE & Kathrine CAMPBELL. There is only one person in the immediate Ayrshire area I cannot account for, and he is Colin McWHARRIE who was hauled up before the Sorn Kirk Session in 1792 accused of being the father of Mary McWHARRIE (mother being Margaret HERRON).

This child of Colin McWHARRIE was born in 1792 at Step-ends which was physically part of Gilmilnscoft, Sorn, Ayr (originally a tower house, it's still standing today). My ancestor Robert McWHARRIE, who was born in 1775, lived in Gilmilnscroft in 1801, then a ploughman. All this makes me suspect Robert and Colin were brothers.

The would-be parents of Edinburgh's Colin McQUARRIE, John McWHARRIE & Catherine CAMPBELL, are elusive; they were in New Cumnock in 1775 when son Robert was born but there's nothing I can find about them earlier. Finding Edinburgh Colin's parents would be a big step forward, even if they turned out to be someone else.

Remember, the High Church, St Giles, was divided into at least four congregations.

Skoosh.

Hi, hector Alexander & Sarah Simpkins were my GG grand parents. They emigrated to New Zealand with their children and Margaret was my great grand mother. She married Richard William Coxon in Dunedin. My 88 year old aunt remembers her and can tell you what she was like. I've heard she was quite strict and he was the softie.  I've also got a photo of her. Just found John Alexander, her elder brother in the NZ archives. He served in the NZ forces and drowned at Gallipoli. And the NZ records show McQuarrie is the surname.
