79 Lowther Street,Whitehaven
« on: Monday 17 June 13 14:23 BST (UK) »
The above address was the home and workplace of my great great grandfather and his father before him and they both carried on business as cabinet makers and guilders. In 1865 he died and in accordance with his will it would appear the premises were sold. In the 1871 census they are occupied by Johnathan Shepherd ( cabinet maker). They have had over the years housed many businesses and now have the local St John Ambulance brigade. I have photos of the outside of the building and viewed a couple of pictures in a book of internal fireplaces. Does anyone out there have any old photos of the inside of the building or any written information about it and in particular the large decorative window at the rear?

Regards

Jardiner

Yours for just 90 grand!

It looks as if some paint has peeled since the StreetView photo.  :-\

The front appeared in one of Alan Routledge's Then & Now books. Upstairs was used as a photographic studio, notably by John Reay & Son of St. Bees.

Hi Stephen

I'm afraid I don't have any actual information about the building itself other than what my ancestors did there and subsequent sale of business and contents upon my great x2 grandfather.

The library across the road had a couple of local history books and it was from these that I saw the photographs of the inside.

Good luck with the search and I would love to hear about your progress.

Hi Jardiner,

I notice six photos of the building are on Rightmove, one of which must show the window.

I think one of those books could be Whitehaven, 1660-1800:

Cheers,

Stephen

Thanks Stephen for that info- very interesting. I'm not sure if it was the same book as it covers a period up to 1800 and the family, from what I can see, did not occupy the building until the early - mid 1800s. That said I don't know if the property was built for them or indeed if it was built much earlier and they just were new owners / occupiers.
