Baptism of Jesse Jones circa. 1812 in Llanbadarnfawr
« on: Tuesday 18 June 13 17:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to research a Jesse Jones who appears on the 1851 census as born about 1812 in Llanbadarnfawr.  Also, I believe his first 2 children John (8) & Mary (5) were possibly from a previous marriage as he only married Jane Mason in 1847. Can anyone help me find Jesse's birth/baptism and also the mother of his first 2 children?

Mary was 2 - it was Ann who was 5 - John was 8 but age obliterated by a smiley

There are 2 1851 entries for a Jesse Jones and both were b Llanbadarnfawr.  The other was b 1811 married to Dianna

You really need to buy a copy of the 1847 marriage cert to establish his fathers name to avoid any confusion with the other Jesse

I have now received the marriage cert. for Jesse Jones & Jane Mason.  Jesse's father was a John Jones, occupation miner.  As I suspected Jesse Jones was a widower.

A bit of a puzzler here

Marriages June qtr 1838 - RD Tregaron there is a Jesse Jones and a Dinah Rees on the same page

Deaths March qtr 1847 RD Tregaron - Dinah Jones

Marriages Dec qtr 1847 RD Aberystwyth - Jesse Jones & Jane Mason

1841 census for Tregaron - Jesse Jones 30 occ farmer and Dinah 50 (as per image)

1851 the other Jesse Jones also b 1811 Llanbadarnfawr aged 40 and wife Dianna aged 54 are in Carmarthen so the 1847 death cannot be hers

there's a possible for Jesse in 1841 in Montgomeryshire, given that ages should have been rounded down.

Hirnantfach, Pennant, Llanbrynmair HO107/1437/6 folio 7 pg 6
Jesse Jones 25 lead miner
James Jones 20 lead miner
John Jones 20 lead miner
all not born in county

I think that Jesse marries 14/5/1842 to Sarah Owens - GRO ref june qtr 1842 Newtown vol 27
pg 209.

so possible relatives of Jane. Who is her father on the cert and what was his occupation?

So far, I can only see a baptism for one of thier children, Richard baptised 3/6/1853 in Ysbyty Cynfyn. Non-conformity is beginning to cross my mind.

ok, this is getting quite confusing. On the 1851 census, the father-in-law in the household is John Mason, and the father on the 1842 marriage for Jesse, is John Mason, so I wonder if we're back to patronymics, giving a son of John the surname Jones or was Jesse illegitimate. Llanbadarnfawr was a very big parish and it's possible that in the inland lead mining areas, patronymics were still in use. The baptisms from before 1815 for the parish aren't online, but I was hoping we could identify siblings to look for their baptisms. The archives and the NLW in Aberystwyth have the earlier baptisms.

Jane's baptism 27/5/1822
