Now you've confused me Osprey, when you say "the father on the 1842 marriage for Jesse, is John Mason" - is 1842 not the marriage to Sarah Owens?  Are you saying that Jesse Jones's father was a John Mason?  As you say, Jesse could have been illegitimate and then his mother (Miss Jones) went on to marry a John Mason and therefore Jesse was brought up with the Mason family - and that's how he met Jane Mason!  Maybe on the 1851 census it should have shown John Mason as "Step Father" rather than "Father-in-law".
Meanwhile, I'm still looking for the birth/baptism of Jesse Jones, born around 1811 in Llanbadarnfawr, Cardigan.  Does anybody have access to the local parish records?

Jesse's father is shown as John Mason on his marriage cert.
Father-in-law was used at that time where we would now use stepfather. You see children on early census entries enumerated as son or daughter-in-law when they're single.

I'm not convinced that Jesse's first marriage was to Sarah Owens - on that marriage it states both he and his father (John Mason) were 'Farmers' whereas on his second marriage to Jane Mason both he and his father (John Jones) were 'Lead Miners'.  Is there nobody out there that can access the birth/baptism records of Llanbadarnfawr for 1810-1813?
