The only other thing that is puzzling me is that if James and Jane had a son on 7 Feb 1849 in Scotland and James died here in Melbourne on 10 May 1850 how did they get here and why did they come?

By ship LOL

But seriously they arrived in Melbourne in the intervening period after a sea voyage of many months. Problem is that not all the indexes for the shipping lists are available on-line.

As the State Library of South Australia states - "Prior to 1852, all Port Philip records are found in NSW rather than Victoria." http://guides.slsa.sa.gov.au/content.php?pid=99525&sid=747059
The library also gives references to books that contain pre-1852 lists that they hold in their collection.

Unfortunately a search of this index in NSW State Records also comes up blank.

Not sure if this is the correct death notice for Clare Long in 1951  :-\
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article23050570

It says she is widow of Harold (and that was one of his middle names)

cheers,

Very interesting snippet here......
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/8694482

Jane gets a mention, as does Peter Gillespie.....obviously Jane and her husband weren't the only ones to come out from Scotland.

Caleb Anderson, younger than Jane, must be a son from a second marriage of Jane's father as his mother is listed as Margaret Martin.
