Hi there,
Could I please get a look up? George Williams, buried 15 Dec 1904 at Ford Cemetary. Address is Stanley Hospital. His grave number is either X 421 or 2A 421...the registry was a tad confusing ;D
I'm not sure who else would be in the grave. His wife's name was Thirza. Thank you so much. Sheila

It's definitely 2A grave 421. I just looked at a map and there is no X. Sheila

Section 2A is a private section, section X is a public section.

Hi Sheila, Hi Blue.
Both these graves do exist, but 2A 421 is a private grave owned by a convent.
George Williams is buried in X421 which as Blue says is a public grave. There are 14 others buried with him.

Ozranga & Blue,
Thank you both so much!
I guess a public grave would be used if the deceased was down on his luck?

No that's a myth. Public graves were the norm at that time. Private graves were a bit posh. It was up to the people concerned whether they paid for a public or private grave. There was no stigma about public graves. Most working class people didn't bother buying a private grave. You will also find people who would be considered better off at the time buried in public graves. At Ford two-thirds of the burials are public:-

Some people mistake public burials for pauper burials. Public burials are single interments where just one place in the grave is purchased. Pauper burials are burials paid for entirely by the parish, the local Church of England authority. There are no pauper burials at Ford as it is a Catholic cemetery. All burials and graves at Ford Cemetery, both public and private, were paid for by next of kin.
