Andrew Gray and Eliza Jane McConnell
« on: Saturday 22 June 13 22:26 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew of Andrew Gray and a Eliza Jane McConnell and any information. Possibly born in County Armagh or Antrim. I am trying to see if they are the parents of my great great grandmother Eliza Gray (born around 1960 - 1961). I know Eliza Gray born in Derriaghy. They possibly had up to 4-5 children - one possibly being Catherine Gray born 10 July 1877. I'm just trying to find a connection if their is one.

I've searched the national archive census and Belfast burial records.

There's an Andrew Gray in 1901 with wife Eliza Jane- living Belfast with Eliza Jane born Co.Armagh:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Shankhill/Langley_Street/949035
Eliza Jane Gray (widow) and daughter Isabella here in 1911 as boarders- but probably related to Mitchell family:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Shankill/Tudor_Place/160144
Andrew Gray died 10 Dec.1907 and buried Belfast City Cemetery. In same plot are Eliza Jane (d.1925), Isabella (d.1959), Thomas (d.1945 age 70).
See https://ssl.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialsearch/BurialSearch.aspx

However, based on the birth registrations below it's likely this is a different couple
________________________________________________________________________________

Children of Andrew Gray & Eliza McConnell (extracted Irish births www.familysearch.org)- unfortunately several of the children registered without first names:
- son (1865) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FR92-8DH
- Hugh Patrick (1868) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPBG-SJQ
- daughter (1869) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPDQ-PJK
- daughter (1873) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F5D2-482
- son (1875) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGZP-NH9
- Catherine (1877) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGNL-W65

An Andrew Gray married (1863 Armagh registration district) to an Eliza Jane ? - could be the parents of the above children.

Forgot to add-

Did your great-grandmother Eliza Gray marry? if so, her marriage certificate should (hopefully) list father's name and occupation.
What about census records for your Eliza? do they list place of birth as Armagh or elsewhere?

First of all sorry I just realised I put 1960 - 1961 I actually meant 1860 - 1861 lol whoops!

Yeah I've seen these records but I have no way in connecting them to Eliza Gray. I have a feeling this could be them it would be great if it were. I only know her mothers maiden name could be McConnell due to the fact that 2 of her own kids had second names as Gray and the other had McConnell. So I am assuming that's her mothers maiden name. Though there is no birth date up above for Eliza Gray.

Eliza Gray married a William John Martin. I found records but no names. roughly around 1889. Eliza was then known as Eliza Gray Martin. Which is on her burial records. I think I am going to have to see if I can get a Birth Certficate for her. Eliza Gray was born in Derriaghy in County Antrim.

I was wondering If Eliza Jane McConnell was her mother as my family always said Eliza was called Eliza Jane Gray but that could have been her mother not herself.

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so if your Eliza Gray was born before that date there would be no birth certificate and you'd then need to search for a baptismal record.

If looks as though Andrew & Eliza Jane Gray could have married in 1863- in which case they may not be the parents of your Eliza Gray.

You'd need to check to see the details for Eliza Gray's father on her marriage certificate to see if he was called Andrew Gray (and also to see his occupation) if you don't already have the marriage certificate.

Marriage of William J Martin and Eliza Gray was registered in Jul-Sep quarter of 1889 in the Lisburn registration district. Volume 1, Page 805. You really need to get that if you don't have the full details.

I couldn't find the Gray-McConnell marriage on familysearch but rootsireland.ie shows an Andrew Gray marrying an Eliza McConnell in 1866 in Antrim. No point getting that until you know if Eliza Gray's father was named Andrew though.

There is a birth of a Terence Gray 1866 Belfast to Andrew Gray and Elizabeth Rodgers, at least I think that's her surname.
