Not necessarily - it is also likely that Mary needed a job to support her and her illegitimate child, and Mr Kirkland needed a housekeeper and was prepared to give her the job even with a child in tow. In time he married her and they had more children.

Unless she names the father of her child on some surviving document ( birthncert, christening) then you will never know the identity of the  father, and it isnt really fair on Mr K to make this assumption.

Mary Jane Prime married Leonard in 1907 (not 1887,she wasnt born then)

Would be interesting to see who she names as her father on her marriage.
If she names Arthur Kirkland, then it does not prove hge was her biological father, just that he was the father figure in her life. If she leaves it blank, (or names someone else!) then she was not only aware of her illegitimacy, but never considered Arthur in the role of 'father'.

if she was working for artfur kirkland she had mary j in 1888{ father unknown} then in 1891 while working for mr kirkland she had william prime{ father unknown} she then married arthur kirkland that same year and in 1892/3 she gave birth to samuel kirkland.both mary n william have the surname prime on the 1901 census the other three children mentioned are kirklands
