Military base Buteshire c1835 - or possible Regiment?
« on: Tuesday 02 July 13 12:13 BST (UK) »
Hi.

My g-g-grandfather Robert Wood was married and died in Victoria, Australia.

His marriage record lists his birthplace as Buteshire, and his father as William Wood, Officer in the Army and his age suggests he was born 1834-5.

I'm having trouble finding a birth record, and it doesn't help that his mother's maiden name is indistinct on his marriage record.  It is stated as Hayes on his death record, but compared to other names on the document appears to start with an M on the birth record.

I thought the father's service record might give some clues.  I know things like father's occupation can be incorrect or just overstated, but was there military base or a Regiment based in Buteshire around that time?

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have already been searching IGI and GROS records, but I haven't found a Robert Wood born in Buteshire in 1834-5 to William Wood and Catherine anything.

That is why I thought I'd look into the possible military angle as an alternative.

Hi

According to this site, Buteshire did not exist before 1890 and ceased to exist in 1975.

I think you have misread that sentence.  What it is saying is that Buteshire had it's own elected county council from 1890, not that Buteshire did not exist before 1890.

Further down that same page it states that Buteshire was a parliamentary constituency from 1708.

One possible is the Argyle and Bute Rifle Regiment another is the Bute Mountain Battery an Artillery Unit (although this one may be a little late for the dates posted).

One possible is the Argyle and Bute Rifle Regiment

Thanks - that's a possible lead.

I'm going to leave this one aside for now, and move on to another mystery for a while.
