Church of. England in Llantarnam
« on: Monday 08 July 13 02:41 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Could you help me, I will be visiting Monmouthshire on July 29, 2013 and hope to visit places where my grandparents lived prior to immigrating to Canada in July 1920.
I want to see the church where they were married,The Church of England in Llantaruam, Wales.
I have not been able to find anything about it online. Any information you could provide me would be most appreciative.
Thank you
Susan Cormack

Hi Susan, If you Google Parish Church Llantarnam, then go down to Llantarnam-Johns Homepage, this has pictures of the church etc, it also states that St Michaels is of the Anglican denomination, hope this helps, Rowley

The church has it's own website:
http://www.stmichaels-llantarnam.co.uk/Home%20Page.htm

But I think you'll find it belongs to The Church in Wales, rather than The Church of England? ;D
Both Anglican, but different bodies!

John Fielding who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the defence of Rorkes Drift during the Zulu War is buried in the cemetery of this church.

Hello
Thanks to all of you who took the time to provide me with information about St. Michael's church.
With your help I have been able to establish it was previously part of the Church of England and that my grandparents were married there. I will give this information to my guide and make arrangements with the church to tour the building and take some pictures.
I am so grateful to visit Wales and see the places my family lived.
Susan

You are correct, Sue!

The Welsh Church Act 1914 disestablished the Anglican Church in Wales and, in 1920 the church adopted the title the Church in Wales.

So, if your grandparents married before 1914 it was in a Church of England church.

Fascinating reading! I found the wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_in_Wales

do you mean you hadn't come across antidisestablishmentarianism before? It's a good school essay when the title takes up a whole line.
