A large number of Irish place names are derived from the description of the surrounding land, and you will find the same name can appear with slight spelling variations given the mix from Irish into English not only in the same country but also in the same county and parish. Castlerea is indeed a town in Roscommon and Castlereagh is the Civil Registration District in which it lies. You may often find a townland with the same name as the Catholic Parish and the Civil Parish which can blur the picture when identifying a location. What is most confusing is the various layers of religious and civil authorities whose boundaries overlap. If the suggested record proves to be the birth of John Crean you might find the resources available at http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/index.shtml to be of some help.

Another researcher on these boards ''My Luck'' is also familiar with the area and may at some point join the thread.

We are all novices with a modicum of expertise in some area which collectively enhances the expertise of the whole.

I clearly read your post

I would suggest you didn't.  I know I checked Google for Castlereagh before posting and I think you were perhaps more focused on the part re: your fathers late birth registration and perhaps overlooked or forgot the other aspect of my reply.

Your original reply was 33 minutes after mine - I read and accepted the point you made about your fathers birth and having no further info to add I moved on to another post. Why on earth would I want to add anything further  ::)

FH research is not about scoring points or one-upmanship - it's about helping people and sharing knowledge.

I am looking for the parents of John Joseph Crean b. 28/7/1928  in Castlerea, Roscommon.  He married in UK 1960 and died in UK  11/12/2006.  He had several brothers and sisters including Mary, Bridget, Ann, Michael and Stephen.  I have no other information.

If this is the correct registration then mother's maiden name was Finan-

Searching just for children called Crean with mother Finan brings up 2 other children which do not conflict with the siblings you've listed.

Thanks that looks like his birth. So can assume mother's name Finan.

I went into second link but found it a bit hard to find anything. There may have been other children. There is possibility father could be called John or Joseph and mother Margaret.

I have so little information.

Just go into link for civil registration index that I posted earlier, put in Crean (tick exact match box) then Finan for mother's surname and 3 results come up.
