Greenwood's map of 1828  showing the big wide open space that would eventually be filled
by Cowpen Estate about 125 later.

 http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/006972FS.htm

Map shows Red House Farm (today in Brierley Road area) and Cowpen South Farm ( about
where Newsham Road meets Princess Louise Road)

Other maps show another Red House just north and inland from Seaton Sluice.

Cowpen High House, now derelict in Front Street, Bebside, was a working farm in my day
 in early 1950s.

We were rehoused from the Bebside hovels ( no running water, no electricity ) in 1952 to Weardale Avenue ( two flushing toilets).  The Grey family got No. 1 Weardale. They had lived in the Toll House in the Ha'penny Woods.

The digging  of the foundations for the estate provided a great " playground" for us kids !

Have found someone else living there too - Robert Harding in the 1891 census.  Am trying to find out more about him as he was also left £100 in Henry Sidney's will. Any help?

The Sidneys were the local " Lords of the Manor" and owned Cowpen Hall and much surrounding
land, including the Red House Farm.

I probably need to take a better look at the Sidneys to see what the connection was with Robert Harding.  Very unusual to see that amount of money left to someone outside of the family. Thanks Michael

Go to the following and load a map of Blyth.

http://www.keystothepast.info/Pages/pgResult.aspx?SEARCH=Blyth

Move Malvins Close to the top right-hand corner and then select older maps 1938-51. Right in the middle is the Red House farm.

Eddy,

 " Bebside Schools"

Do you refer to the schools within Bebside Colliery village or to later schools built adjacent to Kitty Brewster ?
