Victorian Birth Registration Place
« on: Friday 12 July 13 07:31 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a 2 Doodson brothers who married 2 Gardiner/Gardener sisters in 1853 & 1856 in Sydney and ventured to Victoria from Sydney for a few years in late 1850s before going back to NSW.

There were a few births and a couple of deaths registered in Victoria during their stay but I don't know where a couple of the birthplace abbreviations relate to.

BEE and B'worth would probably mean BEECHWORTH but I need help with the following birth places.

SYDNEY FLA
W'SHED

Any ideas please.

Gerry

Hi Gerry

Victorian place name abbreviations can be quite enigmatic as you have found.  My understanding is that there was no standardisation for the abbreviations at all.

The Resources section has a couple of sites which may help - but not in your case!

Place names in Victoria abbreviations
·   http://talltrees.sirrah-comp.com/resources/vic_abbr.htm
·   http://www.historyaustralia.org.au/ifhaa/misc/vicnames.htm

I note that there is a 'Woolshed Rd' in Beechworth so perhaps that's one of them?

Not much help, really - sorry.

Hi Judith,

Thanks for the response, I forgot there was one more

Death of Ann DOODSON, Vic, 1857/2274, birth place SYDN

The Woolshed Rd sounds logical and it's in Beechworth.

WOOLSHED/WOOLSHED FALLS near Beechworth
SYDNEY FLAT near Bendigo

You can trace names of places via the registration numbers on the VIC index to see the various abbreviations & spellings given.

Thanks Warncoort and Merlin for your responses,  I might be lucky and find the infant burials for Jane Doodson at Beechworth in 1859 and Ann Doodson at Sydney Flat or Sydenham in 1857.
