Where is the grave of Spencer Bold Hesketh (1853-1903)?
« on: Thursday 18 July 13 07:13 BST (UK) »
The sketch book of my 3+great grandfather, Adolphus Hardisty Lindgren (1828-1908), has recently come to light and I am trying to identify the unnamed pictures.  Whilst most are early views of Vancouver, some may well have been painted prior to his emigration from London in 1900.

One is a detailed drawing of a grave:

Spencer Bold Hesketh
son of the late Robert Hesketh
Formerly H.R.M. Consul at Rio de Janeiro
Born April 23, 1853
Died December 5, 1903
He giveth his beloved sleep.

Searching on-line, I can find details of SBH's naval life in England and Australia, but no reference to his death, which might indicate in which cemetery AHL was sitting with his paints.  Any assistance in this matter would be most gratefully received.  Thank you.

Spencer Bold Hesketh died at sea!

Is there a family graveyard?
Presumably, with his name and status, the family were well off?

FindMyPast has some information under:
Overseas Deaths
Maritime Deaths (2 entries: Canada & Unknown)

Might be worth buying some credits to look at these?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

FindMyPast has a transcribed record of the death of Spencer B Hesketh, 5 Nov 1903, place "Vancouver B.C".

Looking at the original image, there is a manuscript amendment to the typed date of 5 November - correct date should be 5 December 1903. He was buried on the 8 December.
He was 3rd officer of the Athenian. Place of death is the typed entry "Vancouver BC" with a manuscript endorsement "on board". He died of heart failure.

Thank you all for this marvellous and speedy detective work!
I evidently still have much to learn about on-lne searching!
