James Moat /Mowat and Elizabeth Pettigrew
« on: Tuesday 23 July 13 12:18 BST (UK) »
Looking for the Birth Record of James Moat /Mowat who according to the 1861 c would have been born C 1827 Tankerness Orkney.

He married Elizabeth Pettigrew on the 31st December 1849 in Coatbridge.

The last record I can find for him is in the 1881 C for Old Monkland.

In the 1891 C Elizabeth is now recorded as being a Widow.  Can find no Death record for James between 1881 and 1891-- any help appreciated.

Frances

Hi
Found a baptism on the Orkneys but not sure the right one.
James Mowat 14.8.1826 Birsay s of Magnus Mowat and Ann Johnston.
No matching baptism for brother William born 1822 on the 1851 census though.
Could the original of James's and Elizabeth's marriage have more details of their parents?

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately nothing on the Marriage Record to indicate the parents of James.

Have found Elizabeth's through her DC but have hit a brick wall with James

Hi

Just wondering if this is James's brother, William on the 1861 - it looks very like him:

Buchanan Street, Old Monkland, Coatbridge
William Mowat, 39. coal miner, b. Kirkwall
Margt, w, 29, b. Barony
Janet, d, 6, b. Old Monkland
William, s, 5, b. do
Margaret, d, 3 mths, b. do

It looks as if he married before 1855 but you might find a death.

Found a DC for the above William , ( 1889  Old Monkland) it gives his father as John Mowatt and Janet Mowatt - no MS !!!

Back to the drawing board.

Interesting marriage in Kirkwall 11 Sept 1812 - John Mowat and Jean Inksetter

Jean/janet were sometimes used interchangeably - usually, though janet was Jessie and Jean was Jane.

Not all marriages are recorded though.
