I came across this site while trying to identify a uniform in a picture.  Thought it might be useful to others.

Here is an old poster from the late 1870s(ish) / early 80s which shows the badges of rank and the differences betwixt the Infantry, Cavalry and Engineers.

Thought it might be useful when trying to get some IDs on photos...

There are some significant changes from this period to WW1/2 which could be confusing. Of major note is that Captains had but x2 stars (only oranges have pips!). Also it may be worth mentioning that officers rank was more often than not worn on the collar.
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Military badge identification website

Thought this might be useful for people looking for military badges.

http  //www.militarybadges.org.uk/ badges/badgestart    .htm   website closed down
Kev.

This site is down and only displaying code, and has done for a couple of weeks now...

If you have a badge ID question, do put it up on the main Armed Forces board...We have an excellent reputation in getting it right!
