Hi

You need to obtain a copy of his birth certificate which should show who his mother was. George was raised by his aunt Mary and her husband Charles Underwood. I think it quite possible that his mother was one of her sisters and that he was born out of wedlock. If I'm right the certificate will probably not show the father's name and you may never find it.

Both of his uncles married and had their own families which is why I don't think that they were the fathers. Uncle Abraham Cross had a son John who in turn married and had a daughter Mary Cross b. about 1873. She married my grandfather Henry Cross (coincidental surname) and they had a daughter Kathleen. But Mary died giving birth and my grandfather later re-married to my grandmother.

Cheers
Tony

Hi you really need that birth certificate or help from someone like Mike in Leicester, who I have sent a message to, my thoughts, one of the girls, prior to any marriage?

Also who are Abraham & Mary, the parents of the Mary Cross who married a Charles Underwood had parents Robert and Sarah?

Also the marriage cert should indicate his fathers name?

I think that you'll find that William died as a baby. As Keyboard says, there are no short cuts, you need to get the certificate(s).
