Marriage of John LANE and Margaret Josephine SMITH - Liverpool
« on: Sunday 04 August 13 06:29 BST (UK) »
Could some kind soul put me out of my misery, please.

Could someone locate the occupation of the father of John LANE at the latter's marriage.  Details:

Liverpool Banns:

John LANE marriage to Margaret Josephine SMITH.  Groom's father's name is William LANE.

FreeBMD index gives a possible date as Sep qtr 1886 Toxteth Park.

I am hoping the occupation is either scripture reader or grocer.  If so I have knocked another hole in the brick wall.  Thank you, Gazania

Oh Karen.  That is the proof. Even the address links up. Thank you so much for your prompt reply.

By taking the risk of boring you, the only information we have about my G grandfather's family (before migration to OZ) is that he was born in Cork, the family were originally catholic but converted to Protestantism.  He had two brothers, one whom was a "home missionary" in Liverpool and the other a missionary in India.  Names unknown.  So with all the records becoming available & indexed, I have been searching for scripture readers etc by the name of Lane in Liverpool.  The missionary in India can wait a while.  I'll now get some selected certificates.  Thank you, Gazania

Yes Elizabeth became a teacher and quite late in life married a clergyman in Bucks but had no children.  I am gradually piecing the family together.  Her brother John has been a bit more difficult as there are lots of John Lanes. Thank you again.  I know where to go when next I am stuck.  Gazania

www.familysearch.org has the family in 1881 census - but no William Henry Lane - should be aged 15 / 16
do you know where he was ?...in a school somewhere perhaps
can`t see this being him - but
William Lane b 1865 Liverpool
aged 16
Juvenile Offender
Newton in Makerfield Reformatory School,Winwick Road
can`t see a Ministers son being a Juvenile Offender - but - you never know

Thank you for your interest.  I have had a half hearted look for William Henry Lane b 1865 but I have a feeling he may have died young although I have not found his death so far.  On the 1871 census, he does not appear with his family (aged 5or 6), nor with them at subsequent censuses.

Emily Lane - I'm still following up.

I have had a previous thread about the Lane family in Liverpool with respect to John the father & Francis the half brother, of above William the scripture reader.

Thank you so much for your interest in the Lanes - a work in progress. Gazania
