Need help with James Auchterlonie from Ceres Fife
« on: Sunday 04 August 13 16:32 BST (UK) »
I like the system on Ancestry where you can copy info from other trees but I guess it only works if the info is right. For James Auctherlonie I am getting at least three different dates for his death.

He is my fourth great grandfather. I have all the info for his daughter  Betsey or Elizabeth Auchterlonie (1800 – 1864). I also have a record for the birth of his son Robert in 1811. His wife was Anne Morrison and they married in 1798. Most sites list his death as 1884 but I cannot find any record for that on scotlandspeople. I found a record for a James Auchterlonie in 1874 but Anne is not listed on the death certificate at all. On this death cert the father is listed as James and no mother is listed. His occupation is Ploughman but on his daughter's marriage certificate it was stone mason. This leads me to think it is not the person I am looking for. Most sources state that James's parents are Charles Auchterlonie and Katherine (or Catharine) Howie.

Many thanks in advance.

When his daughter married, which I assume is after 1854 if you have a statutory certificate for it, did it say that her father was still alive? If so, you should find him (under some spelling) in the 1851 census.

Hi ,

Some have his death as November 1840 , and his wifes death as 12th November 1848(gravestone ?).

Unfortunately I think the 1841 Census for Ceres is missing.
Can't see them in Fife on the 1851 Census.

Hello,
I clicked on the first link which Sheena-Ann Brown posted. That brought up an Auchterlonie Tree on Ancestry which says:
"James Auchterlonie b Scotland, 14th Jan 1777. Son of Charles Auchterlonie & Katherine Howie.
Married Anne Morrison and had 2 children.
He passed away 1884 in Scotland."

Mmmmm. That would make him 107yrs. old when he "passed away in Scotland." Mmmmm.

                    Regards,     Dod.

I noticed on the Ancestry tree that Anne Morrison is also shown as dying in 1884 as is  daughter Jean Munro nee Auchterlonie. Jane Munro or Auchterlonie did die in 1884 (Scotlandspeople) and presumably both parents were shown as deceased on her death certificate and this has been translated on to Ancestry as deceased by 1884 but shows up as looking as if it is the actual year of death.
