DOHERTY "Lumber King of Rochester" ???
« on: Monday 05 August 13 06:20 BST (UK) »
When my aunt visited Callaghan cousins in Letterkenny, Donegal, Ireland in the early 1980s, she was shown a newspaper clipping about a Doherty relative referred to in the article as The Lumber King of Rochester in Australia.  I did some googling and didn't find anything about Rochester having been a lumber town...  My gggrandmother was Mary Doherty.  The clipping may have been sent to her before 1883 or later to her daughter, whose children were showing it to my aunt.
Sadly, all I know about Mary Doherty is her name and that she married James Callahan probably before she had my ggrandmother Annie in 1868, all probably in Donegal.
Anyone out there descended from a Lumber King?
Main focus: Callahan, Doherty, Gibbons, all probably Donegal
Also McHugh, O'Leary, Perry, Kenney, Roche, Schubert, McCarthy, Carroll

Hi there,

May I ask for a tad more info please  :)

Who migrated?
When were they born?
Which colony did they migrate to?   New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, or perhaps New Zealand?
When did they migrate?
What were their parents' names?

I wonder if "lumber king of Rochester" could actually be referring to Rochester, America (USA), although there's  Rochester in Victoria and Rochester in South Australia.  It is just that "lumber" is not a word that regularly crops up in newspaper articles.

Here's a link to the free to search digitised historic newspapers sites for Australia and for New Zealand
