NSW is a different state to Victoria.

Here is Victorian BDM  http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/home/family+history/

cheers,
  Ros
Each state NSW, VIC, WA, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, Northern Territory, A.C.T has its own BDM - very annoying  :( so ancestry is useful for searching across states.

Gah!  I feel like such an idiot!  Of course!  And I did just notice that on a map the other day when trying to learn where Rochester is.  Y'know, I saw dot gov and in my haste to find something (anything!) I assumed it would include the whole country.
Ok, I'm slinking off to study up on your great country (and states and districts) :-[
Main focus: Callahan, Doherty, Gibbons, all probably Donegal
Also McHugh, O'Leary, Perry, Kenney, Roche, Schubert, McCarthy, Carroll

No need to pay to search records from Vic bdm.  Many of us have resources.  Just ask what you would like us to search for.

Only travelled through Rochester a few weeks ago :)

Wow!  You're good and you're fast, Cando; thank you!
Do you think any of your sources might include a townland birth location for Patrick and/or William Doherty?  Anything (besides same parents' names) to indicate they might have been brothers, though 17 years apart?
I wondered whether a death record would include birth townland?  I looked at Victoria bmd but they don't even show you the index entry unless they get $.99 and your credit card info!
I searched the Trove site for an obit for William, but only the older one got a mention--the one who died in Wee Waa whose parents are Edward and Jane (not Michael and Hannah).
I feel on the edge of discovery here, but to make the connection, I need a sister Mary for these boys and much younger sisters or nieces for Hannah named Ann and Kate (sigh).  Plus, my Mary was said to have been born in England, but returned to Donegal ...

When I saw "King of Rochester"  and Church Hill in the obit, I knew then that he was "ours!"  This is so exciting!  For at least 15 years I've been combing the internet to find anything about my ggmother's parents and this is the first clue; thank you so much!
So, he's likely a brother to my my gggmother Mary Doherty.  His mother was likely sister to William Gibbons, father of the women who took in my ggmother at  15.  She called them aunt, but technically they would have been first cousins once removed.  Maybe I'll find someone like you and Cando and JM in Donegal who can guide me to document the connections. ;D
And, my goodness, what a fine upstandin' fella he was, too!
Really, this is wonderful!  Thank you all.  If there's any way I can help you, I'd be delighted!
