Whiston Union Workhouse Info
« on: Wednesday 07 August 13 21:32 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I was wondering if it was possible to access a record which states why Catherine Fitzpatrick was in the Whiston Union workhouse when she died on the 9th of April 1884.  Her husband Thomas Fitzpatrick died seven months later at home in Prescot, rather than in the workhouse.

Thank you

The Workhouses had infirmaries which cared for the sick who could not be cared for at home.  My great grandparents both died in the WH infirmary but they had their own house

I was just there all day yesterday but I ran out of time and could not look into it.  I live four hundred miles away and returned home today.  I am thinking it was connected with illness.

Yes, I was at the church but I didn't realise she was buried there until after I had left.  There are a number of Roman Catholic burials in St Mary the Virgin Church of England burial ground in Prescot.

Oops, I should have said buried rather than died.  I really would like to find out why she was in there; does anyone know if any records exist?

A book that was published ' A History of Prescot Union Workhouse' acknowledges the help of St Helens Library for much of its information, it might be worth emailing them to see if they can help.
