Joseph Gill Master Mariner born 1848
« on: Thursday 08 August 13 13:35 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am currently researching Joseph Gill (3rd Great Grandfather),
I cant seem to find on any of the census between 1881-1901
I have him on 1851-1871 and 1911 Census,
I guess the reason that I cant find him on the census is that he was a Mariner so would have been out at sea alot.

He was born in Weybourne Norfolk, his parents where James Gill and Caroline Gill,
(From St.Columb Minor and Fowey)
His father was in the Coast Guard and received a Greenwich Pension
I am unsure why he was born in Norfolk, but all of his siblings where born in Cornwall I believe, perhaps it was  something to do with his father being in the coast guard?Any suggestions would be useful!

On the Eighth of July 1869 he received his second mate certificate (Number 90648)
On the 19 of October 1875 he received his certificate as First mate

He married a Jane Coath at the age of 28 in 1876(The place is unknown)

On the 31 of August 1877 he received his Master Mariner Certificate

That's is all I have on him,
could somebody help me find him on other census if that's possible?
Or would there be no record of where he was if he was at sea?

James Gill worked at Weybourne from 1 Nov 1845, until he was removed to Haven Hole as a punishment on 11 Oct 1850. From there he was transferred to Cliff Creek following his promotion to Commissioned Boatman (a Petty Officer in the CG Service), and then on 26 July 1856 to Stonehouse Point.

While at Cliff Creek he was one of the 2600 Coastguards who were to serve in the Royal Navy during the Crimean War. He served as a Able Seaman on HMS Euryalus, being awarded the Baltic Medal. This was not his only medal, because he was nominated to the CG Service from HMS Dido on her return from China, where he was awarded the 1st China War Medal.

In 1845 he was issued with a Seamen's Ticket on which he gave his date of birth as 25 July 1816,  born Fowey, 5' 4'' tall, black hair, swarthy complexion, hazel eyes, tree of life tattooed on his left arm, first went to sea as a boy in 1836, served 3 years in the RN.

That's is intresting may I ask where you found all of this information?
I wonder what he did to be moved?
Do you know if there would be any other records that I could view?
Thanks!

The information regarding his Coastguard Service was found in the Coastguard Establishment Books. These can be downloaded for free from the National Archives, and are in the ADM 175 series, one word of caution they are quite large files. As a starting point you could look at ADM 175/7 pdf 463, this is his posting to Stonehouse Point and will have details of his next station.

My particular interest is those Coastguards who served in the navy during the Crimean War. I've created a database of these men using the various Ship's Description Books, medal rolls, and CG Establishment Books. Currently I'm adding details of those men who were issued Merchant Seamen's Tickets. It was from the Ticket to James Gill that I found the details of his physical description. These are available on Find my Past.

Regarding the punishment, this could be for any number of reasons, drunkenness, a failure to follow orders, and I've even seen a wife's behaviour given! The punishment was not the move itself, but the fact that the man had to meet the cost of relocating himself, and his family, where normally this would be met by the Service.
