I see thank you very much!
Do you know if when he was serving during the Opium and Crimean war if he actually left the ship or was he just onboard as a crew member?

The following link will give you an excellent idea as to Dido's involvement during the 1st China War:

As to service in the Baltic, in 1854 it was basically a blockade, but in 1855 Euryalus took part in the combined operation with the French, bombarding the Forts at Sveaborg. Although the Baltic campaign achieved very little by direct action, the fleet ensured that the Russian Fleet never put to sea, blockaded the then capital, St Petersburg, and tied-up significant numbers of troops that would have otherwise been released to fight in the Crimea.

Hello Griffl
My husband is also a descendant of James Gill via Joseph Gill. We have just returned from a trip to Weybourne to get a feel for their experience there. We'd love to share what we and you have discovered about this fascinating family. Hope you'll get in touch.
Rhiannon

Thanks for the advice on using the forum. I'm in touch now with the original poster and am happy to share the detail and photographs I have of James and Joseph Gill and descendants with any relatives who are interested.I'm so grateful to crimea1854 for the background provided, which helped me make sense of family history.
