Mallow Parish Registers - LEAHY
« on: Saturday 10 August 13 18:52 BST (UK) »
Hi
So far I only have one Irish ancestor and have no knowledge of Irish genealogy so am looking for some help.

According to the 1911 census he was born in Mallow, Cork around 1822 (other censuses just said Cork or Ireland - now I have a parish). How do I find out about his baptism and parents? Can anyone please do a look up?

His name is Jeremiah LEAHY (died 1915 in Canning Town). From 1861 and the rest of his life he lived in Plaistow/Canning Town/Stepney in Essex - east London now. I don't know when he came to England. He married a Margaret HORAN, who I think was born in London around 1828 although probably of Irish descent I suppose, in St. Giles, London in 1852. They had children named Edward John, Ellen, William, Mary and Ann.

Hope someone can help!

thanks

Hi

There are a bunch of Jeremiah Leahy's at http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=2&confirmPageView=Y

If the link doesn't work go to rootsireland.ie   You can view some information, but you have to pay to purchase it.  There is a Jeremiah Leahy born in 1822, 23, etc.

Hello Barb

Thank you for that link, that's useful. I have done the search, but it seems that it costs €5 just to look at details for one entry, which might not be correct. That seems quite steep. Is there no other way?

Also is there any way one can find out when someone from Ireland came to England, other than the census?

Thanks very much

Civil Registration didnt begin in Ireland until 1864. Given Jeremiahs birth c 1822 the only way is to source his Baptism record. Do you have his marriage record - this should have his fathers name. Also his death record may have some details (not sure of records in uk)
There are no records of people moving from Ireland to UK. :)

Paul, those Co. Cork baptisms:

- Jeremiah LEAHY, 13 Feb 1820, Buttevant (10 km N of Mallow), s/ Honora [baptised with James, Bridget, and John - all illegitimate children on Honora]
- Jeremiah LEAHY, 17 Nov 1822, Castletownroche (15 km E of Mallow), s/ Thomas Leahy & Mary Hanlan of Ansgrove
