Robert Ernest Rollings - Canadian WWI/II Veteran
« on: Sunday 11 August 13 16:42 BST (UK) »
I have basic information on this soldier and additional information on where/parish he was married to Elizabeth WOOD. Elizabeth was married THREE  times in England. This does not seem to be evident in any published genealogy. Known Canadian  residences of Robert are Malton and Scarborough, Ontario.

What year/years are you looking at. What was his profession and was he still married to Elizabeth when in Canada. Do you have date of death. More info will help fellow rootschatters find him.

Robert was either still in the Canadian Army on marriage day 28 April 1919 or had been "demobbed" and was still in England. His civilian occupation was Labourer and he was 21 years old when he married. However if his age on enlistment day was correct he would actually have been 19 years, 11 months and 24 days old when he married. Born 4 March 1899. Obviously the prospect of getting his parents' (in Canada) permission for the marriage did not appeal to him. Robert died 1 May 1955, Scarborough, Ontario.

What type of information are you looking for?

He enlisted 9 Jan 1917 in W. Toronto, Ontario
Ernest Rollings
Reg # 1024533
Next of kin - father, Thomas William Rollings, Malton, ON.
b. 4 March 1899

If my math is correct, he would have been 20 years and almost 2 months at time of marriage in 1919. If in the military, he would not have needed his parents permission to marry, only his superior officer.

I forgot to put this link in the last post. You can order his military file using the information from his attestation papers at the site above.

You can access the 1901 and 1911 census for free at both of the following sites

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/Pages/census.aspx

http://automatedgenealogy.com

You can also access the 1921 census through ancestry.ca for free. It is not indexed and you have to sort through pages of census and it is helpful if you know the district and ward. You do have a bit of info to go by as you have the district from 1911 and you can also check under Malton. If will be time consuming but you may get lucky and find something.
