Hi Julie

Some guesses for you.

John (b1858) married Ann/Elizabeth most likely in Co. Durham - although she is originally from Shropshire he is already in Durham in 1871 (with his parents).  I guess you are looking for an Ann/Elizabeth born Shropshire who was also in Co.Durham by 1876 when Margaret (oldest child) was born.

John (b1818) married to Mary (b1817).  I am guessing this is a second marriage for one or more possibly both of them.  Their oldest child in 1871 was born 1856 (William) this would have meant they were in their late 30's before having children - I can't find them together in 1861 and I can't find either William or Benjamen (Leighton) in 1861 either.

This is John (b1818) and Mary with the other brothers and sisters of John (b1858) in the 1881 census

John LEIGHTON   Head   M   Male   66   Holy Well, Flint, Wales   Coal Miner
Mary LEIGHTON   Wife   M   Female   60   Flint, Flint, Wales
Benjamin LEIGHTON   Son   U   Male   20   Bagillt, Flint, Wales   Coal Miner
Stephen LEIGHTON   Son   U   Male   18   Bagillt, Flint, Wales   Coal Miner
Margaret DAVIS   G Daur   U   Female   17   Brandon, Durham, England
Joseph LEIGHTON   Boarder   M   Male   34   Bagillt, Flint, Wales   Coal Miner
Robert LEIGHTON   Nephew   U   Male   21   Holywell, Flint, Wales   Coal Miner
Samuel ATKINSON   Boarder   U   Male   23   Wigan, Lancashire, England   Coal Miner

Windlestone Colliery Cottage  Chilton, Durham, England

RG11 4903 / 20 page 33

You will note that they have a 17 year old grand daughter - nearly as old as their children, so they obviously (between them) have older children.

I will have another look

Hi Julia

I am pretty sure this is your mysterious Ann E

Anne E CADWALLENDER - shows as married John LEIGHTON 1875 in Durham

Marriage DEC QTR 1875 Durham 10a 560
CADWALLENDER  Ann Elizabeth
LEIGHTON  John

This marriage also shows on the Durham records index as definitely the two that married each other

http://www.durham.gov.uk/gro/newgro.nsf/search?open&C0425009140614062005$

I have also found her with her family in 1871, in Wombridge Shropshire

RG10/2810 Folio 26 page 45
RD Wellington
SubRD  Wombridge
ED   4
Civil Parish Wombridge
Ecclesiastical parish Oakengates
Town Oakengates

Thomas Cadwallader b 1821  Wombridge, Shropshire Head  Coal Miner
Margaret Cadwallader b 1825  Wombridge, Shropshire Wife
Enoch Cadwallader b 1847  Wombridge, Shropshire Son
John Cadwallader b1848  Wombridge, Shropshire Son
Isabella Cadwallader b 1852  Wombridge, Shropshire Dau
Ann Elizabeth Cadwallader b1857  Wombridge, Shropshire Dau
Eliza Cadwallader b 1860  Wombridge, Shropshire Dau
Rosannah Cadwallader b1862  Wombridge, Shropshire Dau
Thomas Cadwallader b 1864  Wombridge, Shropshire Son
William Cadwallader b 1866  Wombridge, Shropshire Son

The street address is Ketley Bank

There are a number of CADWALLENDER/CADWALLADER family members in the Durham area by 1881 giving place of birth as Ketley/Kelly Bank so it looks like they all moved up there.  Also she names one of her children Enoch.....

Hope this helps

Here's Ann Elizabeth's father in 1841 Census with his family

John 45 miner, Mary 45, THOMAS 20 miner, Samuel 12 miner, John 9, Robert 5. Address is Ketley Bank.

They were the only family in Wellington area with that surname so it's quite possible that the other families found later in Durham could be Thomas' brothers relations.
Wellington/Dawley areas - Attwood, Podmore, Wall
Sheffield - Oxspring
Machester - Clarkson
London - Whiffen/in
Leics. - Wass
