Ballybunion Auxiliary Police detachment 1921
« on: Saturday 17 August 13 09:13 BST (UK) »
There was an Auxiliary police detachment stationed at Ballybunion in 1921, and I am trying to find where they were billeted. Or indeed anything about their presence there.

1921 Mar 12. A train left Tralee for Listowel carrying wages for this detachment. The money was handed over at Listowel station, and the train returned to Tralee. It was ambushed at Tubrid on the way back . I have full details of the ambush.

Can anyone help with what was going on in Ballybunion with the Auxiliaries?

Hi Corisande, have you checked out the Bureau of Military History website?  I've typed in "Ballybunion" and have come up with quite a few hits.  I can't seem to narrow it down much other than getting statements with any mention of Ballybunion....you may have more luck.

I presume it was the Lartigue train on which they travelled...I know that this had to finish operating in early 1920s because of the track being damaged by explosions.

Thanks breenbyrne

I have been through most of the available resources, but most of the stuff to do with the Auxiliaries has been lost in the mists of time.

I was trying here to see if anyone locally might have an idea as to where they were billeted. As there was a DI3 in charge (in other words an Auxiliary DI3 picked up the money) I assume therefore that a section of 20 to 25 men were stationed in Ballybunion. But how long their sojourn there was, I have no idea.

I assume that the number of available houses was quite small there. The Auxiliaries tended to take up residence in either a large country house, a hotel or oddly the local workhouse
