Foreign St Camberwell Lambeth
« on: Sunday 18 August 13 03:12 BST (UK) »
Hello, through the UK census I have had various (Spong) family members living at 19 and 27 Foreign Street Camberwell (Brixton) Lambeth. I have carried out considerable research to find if this street had changed names but only recently found the following;
Foreign Street appears to run south from Lilford Road Camberwell on the western side of the railway line. The area where Foreign St was, now seems to be parkland or at least covered with grass & trees. All that remains is the start of the street from Lilford Rd between No.s 80 & 82 Lilford Rd Camberwell. My only inkling that this is specifically where Foreign St was is the below map. Can anyone confirm this is where Foreign St was or provide any history re this street?

Any assistance greatly appreciated

Hi

There's a map   here - shows Foreign Street, Brixton.

Use your 'find' function to find "Foreign Steet"  on the page to get to the right section of the page where the map is.  It's at abt 9 o'clock on the map, parallel to the railway line

Cheers

Seems like Foreign Street was one of those bombed or partially bombed in WW2 and then completely gone in post-WW2 redevelopment

Hi Steve

Here's Foreign Street in the 1908 Bartholemew's map:

http://mapco.net/bart1908/bart48.htm

It was just above Loughborough Junction station on the left hand side of the map.

Yes, it is now covered by Elam Street Open Space. You walk past it on the way to Lambeth Archives at the Minet Library  ;)

You could contact them for more information -- it's actually in Lambeth but close to the border with Camberwell.

Thank you everyone, I now have a very clear picture of Foreign St, which runs north from Gordon Grove to Lilford Rd paralleling the railway line to it's east. (Almost a northern extension to Wickwood St as this street crosses Gordon Grove).

Thank you again everyone.

Hi Steve
Thanks for your post, I have an interest as my mum was born in 3 Foreign Street in 1920.
If you search on google images, in amongst the pictures of Boris Johnson and the Foreign Office you'll find this nice picture:

Thank you Chris for sending me the link for Foreign St. Explains why its no longer there. It’s the only photo I've seen of the street, so nice to have.
