Costello Family - Callan
« on: Tuesday 20 August 13 21:10 BST (UK) »
Hi - I am looking to find out information on the Costello family of Callan. I know William Costello was the town clerk in the 1930's and early 1940's and he had six children three of whom died very young along with his wife. I believe they lived on Mill Street in Callan. Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards - Oisín

Possible baptism for William COSTELLOE 1873

William COSTELLO 28 in Callan on 1901 Census

William COSTELLO 37 in Callan on 1911 Census

First two entries possible marriage 1914 and death 1942 in the civil records
You can search the newspaper archives www.irishnewsarchives.com for free online
However to see the articles you must subscribe and pay or access at a library with Family Research facilities.
Searching for William & Costello & Callan between Jul 01 1942 and Sep 30 1942 gives just three hits, two of which are Aug 29 1942 in the BDM's notices. If these refer to William his death notice/obituary could give you more information to work with.

There were two possible spouses on the marriage record but only one name matches a death at an early age
Death of Margaret COSTELLO in 1922 aged 26
This would imply William’s spouse was Margaret POWER

There was a death for an Anastasia COSTELLO (the second possible given name) but she was 70

The children of this marriage were born before the mother’s maiden name was included on the Civil Records; these are the results of requesting births from 1914 to 1922 in Callan named COSTELLO
You will see that one or two (e.g. Patrick and Thomas in 1918) are too close to be siblings
Also Bridget and Ellen were twins – same reference

These details will help make an educated guess as to which certificates to look for, for confirmation

You will also see that there are marriages in 1942 (Mary) and 1943 (Margaret) that are possibly from the family.

Hope that this helps your search - RootsChat rules do not allow discussions on the living
This family were born between 1914 and 1922 and there is a slim possibility some may be alive;
however their children may well be, if you are to research further!

Happy hunting!
