'Ice Palace' in Clapham/Battersea area of London, c.1910?
« on: Wednesday 21 August 13 12:32 BST (UK) »
I am researching the life of one of my most enigmatic great uncles, Thomas Warlters Burrows Lindgren.
His professional life is inexplicably inconsistent and at times surprising.
In 1910, he was living at 33, Bolan Street, Battersea, when his sister wrote from Berlin to ask whether he was "Still on the Ice Palace?"
The famous Streatham Ice Rink did not open until the 1930s, so what could she have been referring to?  My searches on-line for any sign of such an establishment in the Battersea/Clapham area have come to naught.
Does anybody have special knowledge of the district that might enlighten me?
Many thanks as ever!

The only "Ice Palace" mentioned in contemporary newspapers (apart from one in Montreal) is the one in Manchester which opened in 1910.

What about Richmond Ice Rink, or Queens?
EDIT: Maybe not! Richmond opened in 1928, Queens in 1930!

Or possibly The Palladium - which was once known as The National Skating Palace?

Other possibilities:
Prince's Skating Club, Knightsbridge (1896-1917)
Niagara Skating Club at York St, Petty France, London

Hang on! Just found this:
Clapton Rink Cinema
Opened on 11th December 1909 as the Clapton Premier Skating Rink, it unfortunately opened just as the craze for roller skating was in decline. It was designed by the architectural firm Fair & Myer. It briefly became the Palais de Danse dance hall until Premier Ice Rinks took it over later in 1910 and converted it into an ice rink which again didn’t last long.

Maybe Battersea Park - there are pictures of skating there - albeit earlier and with it not looking as grand as an "Ice Palace", but worth a thought.

Do you know where he was during the following year's census?

Here's an illustration, supposedly dated around 1910, but perhaps earlier because the Palladium itself opened in that year.

Thank you all.
Shaun, in 1911 he was travelling in Canada, whilst his wife had moved to Lavender Hill, so unfortunately no clues there!
