Monumental Inscriptions
« on: Thursday 22 August 13 10:05 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for a grave for Neil Ferguson who died 05.12.1945 aged 94 in Aberfeldy. His first wife, Rose Anna Spree, is buried in Lair No. 214, Moulin graveyard. He remarried Isabella Morgan/Sinclair. Can anyone help? Should someone have a photograph of either of the stones I'd be thrilled.

Many thanks

No headstone as far as I can find for Neil Ferguson in either Moulin or Aberfeldy, but here is the stone at Moulin for Rose Anna Spree.

Hi,
I'm new to rootschat and seem to be a bit late for this thread (almost a year).  Neil Ferguson and Rose Anna Spree were my great grandparents.  It's a while since I did family research so you probably have much more info than I do.  I don't know if there is an easy way to compare notes on these boards?

I looked into this family a while ago for a friend.

Niel Fergusson was born in 1852 in Aberfeldy and died in 1945 in Aberfeldy, Perthshire.  He was a soldier in his early life and met and married Rose Anna Spree (1856-1912), the widow of a fellow soldier, James Lawrence, in Bengal India in 1879.  His less than distinguished military record is available at the National Archives at Kew.  They had ten children, 4 of whom survived, Albert Edward 1885 b. Hounslow, England, George Victor 1887, b. Glasgow, Robert Lennord 1889 b. Edinburgh and Margaret Betsey 1991 b. Pitlochry.  The other six are those mentioned on the gravestone - Frederick, John 1893-93 b. Perth, Peter James 1893-93, b. Moulin, Duncan 1894-98 b. Moulin, Neil 1895-95 b. Moulin and Rose Anna 1896-97 b. Moulin.  I couldn't find a birth or death for Frederick.  It is possible he was their first child and born in India.  There is a 6 year gap between the marriage and the birth of Albert Edward. There is a 1901 and 1911 census available for them.

Niel Fergusson was the son of:
John Fergusson b. 1822 in Weem, Perthshire and Margaret MacKay 1811-1880, d. Dull, Perthshire (married 1846 Weem).
who was the son of:
John Fergusson b. 1778 in Weem, Perthshire and Isabell Robertson (married in 1819, Weem)
who was the son of:
William Fergusson and Janet Carmichael
ScotlandsPeople have Old Parish Records for all the aforementioned births and marriages.

And that is all I have!  Happy hunting.

Thanks for your reply… I have that information already (including a copy of the war record!)

If your friend was still interested the notes I have (not my research) show..
Fred - Full name: Neil Frederick Spree, Born: 1874 St Dunstans, Kent,  Mother: Rose Anna Spree,  Father: Unknown,  Died: 1884  aged 9 years 9 months.  The death certificate shows him as Frederick Spree, Mother Rose Anna now the wife of Private Neil Ferguson XV Hussars.  Cause of death: Hip Joint disease.
John - Born 1883 Aldershot Barracks died 1884 Aldershot Barracks

I have found him also in 1891 and 1861 census

I also have a photograph showing George Victor, Albert Edward, Margaret-Betsey and Robert Lennard as young children

Thank you for that.  I'll forward it all on.  It's quite a coincidence Frederick having the first name Neil in Kent.  I wonder if Niel Fergusson was down there with the army and met her in 1874, and then they came across each other again in India.  I suppose we'll never know.  If you could possibly attach a copy of the photograph I'll forward it on.  I'm sure he'll be extremely grateful.  Many thanks.
