Mrs S.F. Scroope and Mrs J. Miley
« on: Saturday 24 August 13 12:36 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to track down some basic biographical information on two early Irish lawn tennis players, who were active circa 1919-30. They are usually listed as "Mrs S.F. Scroope" and "Mrs J.[G.] Miley", so were no doubt the wives of  the players Simon Scroope and John/Jack Miley respectively.

However, I haven't been able to find either their first name(s) or maiden names, when they married, when and where they were born, etc.

Any help with this search would be much appreciated.

Thanks to his unusual name only 2 marriages for a Simon Scroope. One in 1884 and one in 1915.
I imagine it is the 1915 one that you want. Bride was either Teresa Kennedy, Alice Celia Mullany or Moira Fottrell.

Simon Fredrick Scroope born Gort 10 Jan 1876. Father Henry Mother Kate Hackett. Died 20 Dec 1958. 80 Park Avenue Ballsbridge. Left effects of £797 19s to his widow Moira. So looks like he married Moira Fottrell.

Civil Marriage Record Reference 1915
match with Simon SCROOPE as found by hasta
1911 census for Moira FOTRELL
This is based on the fact that when John George FOTTRELL’s widow Angile/Angela died on Oct 29 1953 in the Gresham Hotel Dublin and left her estate to Moira SCROOPE

John George SCROOPE married Elizabeth HOEY in 1884 Marriage record
There is no obvious birth record of a Moira FOTTRELL
but there is for Brendan her brother LINK
as well as other records referring to him, as he died in France in 1915.
His birth record is Rathdown 1885 Oct-Dec V2 P786
and this certificate would confirm his parents to help locate Moira;
she is most likely one of the Marys born in Rathdown at that time.

As referred to by Hasta, Simon SCROOPE died in 1958. Hasta referred to probate in England, he also left a will, shown on page 509 of this link in favour of Moira SCROOPE in Ireland, implying she was still alive at that time.
Note 14 Melvin Road, Ballsbridge was his address; 80 Park Ave is where he died.

I think it is fair to assume for now, subject to certificates confirming the above,
that Mrs. Simon SCROOPE was one Moira FOTTRELL bc1888 d>1958

^^^^

Thanks for all of the above help. I'm sure about Simon Scroope's wife, but there were two J. Mileys, so I'm still not certain about his case.

Here is a link that proves there were two J. Mileys:

I had a look at your link newmark401

Just to note that John Felix O'Connell MILEY's birth is shown as 1866 when it was in fact 1886
Civil Birth Record Dublin South Jul-Sep 1886 V2 P590
Is it possible that he and Jack MILEY are one and the same?
There are no details at all given for Jack, which is a diminutive of John.

I agree with dathai that the wife of John Felix was Mary Josephine MINCH
If you search for births between 1921 and 1940 with the surname MILEY and mother MINCH;
there are two possibilities in Dublin South but no match to the other surnames
given on the marriage record shown.

There is a family tree on line that states that John Felix died in 1925 but I would dispute this based on the dates give for the births of his children and his entry on the register of electors in 1939.

Online records show him studying law in Oxford, serving in the RFA as a 2nd Lieut/Cpt. during WW1, and living mainly at 49 Ailesbury Road.

Following up on Mary MINCH and seeing if there are records of a Miss MINCH may help.
If someone could look up the register of electors in Pearse Stree for you, they may be able to follow the family up to 1963 to locate death dates.

His brother Valentine William was born Dublin South Jul-Sep 1888 V2 P560
(F) Daniel O'Connell MILEY 1857-1928 (M) Elizabeth Eleanor ? c1864-1938
He married Millicent Maureen CURRAN Rathdown Apr-Jun 1918 V2 P848
and had at least five children from 1919 to 1927
He lived at Temple Hill, Killiney, Co. Dublin at the time of his death on Nov 28 1959

myluck! I had a look at some newspapers for them earlier and I thought the same thing. ;) John Felix O'Connell Miley is always refered to as just JACK.
Question for you Newmark which might clarify if they are the same man or not.
Which do you have as captain of The Davis Cup Team in 1923 ? Jack Miley or John Felix Miley?
Hilarious. I hate Tennis!!!! :D

Can't say tennis is my sport either but its not the worst!

On Mary Josephine MINCH; she was born to Matthew J MINCH MP JP and his second wife Elizabeth Mary O'Kelly at Rockfield House, Athy and baptised on Dec 8 1897 in Athy; even though her birth record is in 1898. Matthew MINCH lived at 14 Ailesbury Rd at the time of his death in 1921 according to his will

The family was a well known for malting and a quick google will get several hits for family information.

She had two brothers and several half-siblings (mother Matthew's first wife Agnes Haydon)
These included Sydney MINCH and John Berkman MINCH

^^^^ Thanks for the additional information. I'm not one hundred per cent certain that there were to J. Miley's. That could well be one and the same person.
