If anyone has a spare minute (Exeter records office)
« on: Saturday 24 August 13 23:09 BST (UK) »
I would be so grateful, I never normally ask for look-up's. I've been in touch with Exeter records office and most of the workhouse records seem to have been destroyed. My great grandmother x3 Elizabeth Rebecca Brooks born 1849 in London, had a son William Henry Brooks out of wedlock in Exeter workhouse in 1872. She then moved upto Hunslet in Leeds to live in slums, I cant imagine why because Ive found no family for her there. But ideally I'm thinking of bastardy bonds, parish poor law, or surviving workhouse records for Elizabeth. William's father was believed to be a Lord, whom she was a servant for in London. I believe Elizabeth had to cease all contact with her family.

Hi there, I don't think this is related, but I'm researching my Brooks family history. I have records of Rebecca Brooks nee Marriot (GGGrandmother) living in Hunslet at this time. I don't have any earlier references to Rebecca, and maiden name would suggest she's not your Rebecca Brooks. But time frame is similar. Rebecca and Richard Brooks had a William Owen, and 4 other children. So I'm guessing this is someone else. Happy to supply more info if you're curious. No anecdotal info sadly, just Census details.

Regards,
Ben

;) not mine but Hunslet was a small poverty ridden place, French nuns moved in to try and sort it out. Perhaps we're connected further down the line! Many folk moved to Holbeck and parts of Leeds .

Was actually checking to see if you need/want more assistance.

Which is why I posted what I had.

I have wm's birth cert staying Elizabeth as his mother, but also family who remember his children talking about his family history. Devon workhouse records destroyed in a fire so this won't be an open and shut look up, hence me leaving the post open.
