Problem Hanmer area place name
« on: Monday 26 August 13 15:19 BST (UK) »
I have found a record of my grandfather's birth, Edward Whitfield b.1882.  I know he was born at Hanmer, nr Whitchurch, Shropshire, but the record shows his place of birth as Cronimos - this is how it looks, but has anyone any ideas if this is correct, and where it is,  as I have never heard of it, although I grew up in that area.

Looking at the vicar's writing on this and next page his "C"'s seem consistent and not the same as this first letter - to me it bears more similarity to "G" (grocer and gamekeeper on next page) but I'm no wiser with "Gronimos" as the rest of the word is quite clear. As it is shown together with Hanmer as place of residence may I suggest it is the name of a house. Not much help really!

Hi

It looks like Cronimos but the nearest that I can find is a Crynos Farm SE of Penley but that looks as if it's over the border!

I don't see anything listed on a 1881-1891 census address search.

Where have you found him on any Census.I've had a quick look using both Flintshire and Shropshire as a possible birthplace and he doesn't show up too readily as birthyear you gave.

Living Little Arowery in 1891 RG12/2120/44/14

Brother Joseph was b. Little Arowry, 1879  and in 1881, they're living at Little Arowry.

Added - nothing in  the vicinity of Little Arowry on 3 old-maps maps that I've looked at

Thanks to those who have replied, it's good to have other opinions on the matter. In reply to William Russell Jones, I have the baptism records of my grandfather Edward b.1882, also one of his brother Richard b.1875, both living at Cronimos - or maybe Gronimos, Hanmer.

The 1881 Wales Census shows Richard living with his parents at Little Arrowry, Hanmer and the 1891 Wales Census shows Edward living with his parents, also at Little Arrowry. I hope this throws a bit more light on the situation.

If you call up "Little Arowry" on "old maps", the modern map initially displayed shows "Cran y Mor" near Croxton pool.
"Cran y Mor" doesn't seem to be recorded on old maps.

Think "Cran y Mor" might be your "Cronimos"
