Just checked Wincanton marriages on FindMyPast

Philip Hurd married Dorothy Ring 8 Sep 1771. Doesn't give grooms occupation or either father's name. If someone has access to a film of actual register it might give more detail. Groom was bachelor and bride spinster. Marriage was by licence,

A Dorothy Hurd was buried 20 Dec 1780, but no mention of her age at death or whether she was  "wife of ....."
James was born abt 1777, but Ring was 1782 or 3, so either not the correct Dorothy or Philip remarried and Ring was the son of the second wife and named in memory of the first. A lot of theories there.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Theories, indeed; but viable ones to pursue...A brilliant discovery, if I may say so.

James HURD 1777 from Census is likely to be Rings Brother.
I have no problem with him being a Surgeon even though he was a Son of a Weaver.
I have 2 Sons of a Market Gardener who went on to be MD's in my Tree.
Also the 1799 Burial of Philip has him as a Gent, and he left a Will so was obviously prosperous.

Wow, all Roly's family found in a matter of a few minutes.

I always neglect FreeReg because it hasn't even got Oxfordshire (my main area of interest) in its drop down county list.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt

Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott
