I have certicates where the place names are difficult to read.
One is in Watten and looks like "Dunn", the other in Halkirk and looks like "Dalnagliton".
Have I got the spelling right and are these names in use today?

The 1861 Census transcription at http://www.freecen.org.uk/ has Dunn as an address in Watten.
There is also a Dalnaclayton in Halkirk.

Before statutory education was introduced spelling could be fluid , and often depended on what was heard.

The National Library of Scotland maps website will give you free access on-line to old maps of Scotland. Click on "Series Maps" and go to the 19th century 6" Ordnance Survey map of the area. It should show the places up in some detail.

Dunn is a farm south of Loch Watten, the Tomb of Dunn there an old burial vault.
